The Mormon Channel: Work and Self-Reliance

In October 2012 McKenna had the incredible opportunity to participate in recording an episode of the Mormon Channel's "We Will Stand" series. I have included the link if you would like to listen to the session. It was episode 19: Work and Self-Reliance. The Mormon Channel: Work and Self Reliance. Sister Christine VanWagenen who has been serving on the General Young Women's Board with Sister Dalton and the other members of the General Young Women's Presidency was the one who called and invited McKenna. She is an incredible woman and we are so blessed to know her. She had McKenna and I, along with the other young women and their mothers come to her home on a Sunday afternoon to extend this invitation. She told McKenna that her name had been prayed about by not only herself, but by Sister Dalton. That she was supposed to be a part of this project. It was such a spiritual experience just being in her home and discussing what Sister VanWagenen wanted each of the girls to do to prepare. We left feeling inspired and uplifted... and McKenna felt a tremendous responsibility to study the scriptures and prepare.
The day of the taping we arrived early at the Conference Center and were escorted back to the area that the recording studio and other areas for taping videos and devotionals are located. Sister VanWagenen spoke to each of us and asked McKenna and I to share with her what we felt one of our greatest spiritual gifts are. Of course I could name a million things I felt McKenna has been blessed with, but I loved the answer she gave about herself. She said that she is a "care-giver". Christine smiled and told her that she feels that is one of the things she has been blessed with as well. She then told McKenna that some people see that as a burden, but that she sees it as an attribute of the Savior. I loved that. We then shared what McKenna had been enduring health wise while trying to prepare. She told us that each and every girl involved had experienced something similar... yet different... and that she knew that the adversary had been trying desperately to distract and discourage them. To keep them from sharing a message that the world needs to hear. Work hard. Be self-reliant. Prepare while you are young to be a blessing to your future family when you are grown. It was an incredible day that we will remember forever. Another blessing that came from this... McKenna met other girls like her self. Girls that are viewed by some as "over-achievers" and "Molly Mormons" that don't ever do anything wrong. And the others girls mentioned it to me as well. Katrina (in the black and white) kept saying... "Wow. there are other girls like me. Sometimes I feel really alone. I have lots of friends... but I don't feel like I fit." Sister VanWagenen had them exchange cell phone numbers and is planning a post-recording-get-together at her home so they can all discuss what they learned and how it has blessed their lives. I think she wants to make sure these girls stay in touch so they can continue to help one another. This strengthened all of our testimonies... and made me so proud of my girl. I am so grateful that McKenna is making such good choices in her life. Even the things that are harder for her... she is trying to improve on and do better. She is such a good example to me! Thank you Sister VanWagenen for this incredible opportunity.

January 2013: Courtney's Bedroom

Part of Courtney's Christmas was to get her room re-arranged and get her chair hung up. First we moved things around... and we all LOVE it this way! Her room feels bigger too!

Then, we went and bought the two bulletin boards and chalk board from Hobby Lobby and painted the frames on them and glued on the ribbon. We took pictures of her at her swim meet and hung those pictures on the bulletin boards. On the chalk board we wrote her current "best times" on different swim events and what the state times are so she knows what she needs to do to hit her goals. She loves it!
And here is her chair... I have painted the wood bar white... so it looks even better now. The wood was stained a reddish color when it was made but the sales lady in San Diego suggested we paint it so it would match her room. She loves this chair and has read more in the last 3 weeks than she had in months. She is on her 3rd novel. It is the perfect place for her to sit and read...

So glad she loves her room. It is her own little place to escape from the world.

Christmas Day 2012

Christmas morning at our house has changed dramaticly over the past few years. As you can see behind Courtney... the sun is up. After sleeping in until about 8:30 and eating a nice breakfast we headed downstairs. The weirdest things Courtney asked for this year... a can of whip cream and a box of her favorite pasta side dish. She is burning crazy amounts of calories... so now she is asking for food for Christmas gifts. Hilarious!
Courtney opening a gift from Kenna....
 Excited?....
She wanted a pair of these swim warm-ups so bad! Every where I looked they wanted about $80 for these exact TYR brand. I found them on our team website for $20!!!! I should probably get on and order them in several sizes so she can have them as she grows.....
We found this Katniss doll for Kenna. Complete with bow and arrows. It made me think of her!!!!
Courtney with her last gift... a hammock chair. She wanted a "hanging bubble chair"... but after researching that a little we found out they cost about $5,000. Not happening. But she LOVES this chair! I will post pictures later.... and by the way.... she thought this was a gun! So funny!
 Courtney with her gifts....
Kenna with her gifts.... and I don't know if you can see it... but her big gift is her new Samsung Gallaxy 3 phone. Nice!
We had a wonderful Christmas and are so grateful for EVERYTHING we have been blessed with.

Christmas Eve 2012

Christmas Eve... the girls were so excited that they wanted to start pretty early. We went ahead and got started by opening our Christmas P.J.'s... Nice hat Torte!

Kenna digging out the "Christmas Eve" gifts...
Dan is shocked at once again receiving a pair of plaid pajama bottoms! There are only so many choices at Cabelas... and he already had the ones with moose and bucks on them...

Courtney chose these ones at Sea World at the penguin gift shop... so she wasn't surprised... but she was thrilled! I like the modesty... she wouldn't wear the top without a t-shirt under it.

For dinner we decided we wanted to BBQ steak and lobster tail. It was snowing and sooooo cold! But dinner was AWESOME! Thanks for braving the elements Dan!

 Ready for dinner!
Then we headed back downstairs to have some fun!

Everyone in their Christmas P.J.'s ....
 Nice hat Dan!
 Cute Miss Torte...

Dan's new assistand gave us this fun game... Courtney wins every time!!!!!!
What a wonderful Christmas Eve for our little family. We had the opportunity to enjoy time together and to think about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

King Family Christmas Party: December 23, 2012

On Sunday the 23rd, we went to our ward for church and then headed down to my parents house. My mom had the girls and I help teach her lesson on Family History Work. She hasn't really had the opportunity to do Geneology the way I have, and felt like it would help to have me and the girls come share our experiences. It was AWESOME! It was so great to share the love I have for family history work with the ladies in her ward. The girls did an amazing job too... and it really left no excuses for anyone in the room to not be involved in one way or another. One of the sisters, that used to live in the ward, was visiting from North Dakota. She took Courtney in the other room and recorded her sharing her testimony and experience in Nebraska gathering information, and her birthday at the San Diego Temple so that she could go back and play it for her youth.

We then headed to mom and dads for our dinner and party. I didn't take very many pictures. I really need to do better at that! Here is Logan terrorizing McKenna during one of the games...
Karen, Angie and Greg snuggling on the love seat...
Courtney opening her gifts... I don't know why I didn't get one of Kenna!
We always love the King party. My parents do so much to make it special for the kids... and for all of us! I am so excited that next year Cheryl, Doug, and their girls will be living here again!

December 21, 2012 Lehi Frenzy Meet

Tonight Courtney had a swim meet at our pool... Grandma and Grandpa King, Grandma Denice, and Uncle Brent and Aunt Karen (King), all came to cheer her on! She was so excited!

Here she is with a couple of her friends on the team... doesn't she look so tiny!!!! These girls have been swimming for 5 or 6 years... our little Torte has only been swimming for about 6 months!!!!

Getting ready to swim one of her events. The half naked white boy in the background is a little distracting....
From up above... Torte doing the breast stroke...
The same stroke from the side... Thanks Brent and Karen for taking pictures! I was head timer and Dan was training to be an official...
 Our little "Torte-pedo"...
We are so happy that Courtney has found something she loves so much... and is so good at! Keep swimming fast little fish!

Courtney's Class Christmas Party! ELF!

For Courtney's class party this year I decided to do an "Elf" movie party. I got permission from the principal... and had to promise we wouldn't watch the entire movie... because if we did we would need a permit... and we had a BLAST!

First we presented her teacher Ms. Albaugh and the aide with their gifts. I can't believe I didn't take a picture of them!!!!! DUH!!! We got a small Christmas tree and I put lights on it. Then I had the kids send in Gift Cards or money for me to purchase gift cards and I attached them to ornaments and put them on the tree. I added a tree skirt... and it was adorable! She LOVED it!!!!

We popped a ton of popcorn and put it in bags for each kid... I made two of these huge thermos's of the "Worlds Best Cup of Hot Cocoa"... I brought pop tarts...candy canes, candy corns... AND....
Spaghetti with SYRUP! The kids begged me to do it... so I did. They actually liked it!!!
It was so much fun! I really wanted to make it a fun party... being that it was the last one they will have at school. Next year they head to Jr. High... and they won't get to have these fun class parties any more. They will definitely will remember this one!

Youth Activity... Temple Square!

Wednesday the 12th, we headed to Temple Square for a combined activity to look at the lights. The kids were so excited! We took McKenna, Courtney, Andrew, Gavin, and Camilla in our car....

We ended up making a quick stop at Riverton Hospital to give a blessing to a new baby of someone that works for Dan. The husband used to be a member of the LDS Church... his wife is not... so it was a BIG deal that they asked. Dan was more than happy to go give this sweet little baby a blessing... and she is doing much better now. It is so hard to see little ones struggling with sickness!
Courtney and Camilla... right after this picture I had to take Courtney to find her food. She had come straight from swim practice, and hadn't had time for dinner... so she is starving. Looking at this picture I can totally see it in her eyes....

Afterwards we met back in the parking garage for hot cocoa and donuts....
Teenage boys... what can I say... I guess Camilla has a donut hanging out of her mouth....

We have a great group of kids... and it was really fun to spend the evening with them!
